About Us

J.C. Harwell & Son Funeral Home was founded in 1893 by Mr. June Harwell in Pennington, Ga. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Harwell moved his family to Mansfield, Ga. where he established himself as a gracious and honest businessman in the community. There were two locations in Mansfield just west of what is now Blackwell’s Grocery. To this day, the Harwells are considered to be an important part of the rich history of this small town.

Mr. Harwell diligently served the residents of Newton County by providing them with the most compassionate, conscientious and professional care. He developed many lasting friendships and became a well-respected leader. This legacy was passed on to his son Charles, and together they moved the funeral home from Mansfield to Covington in 1927.

J.C. Harwell & Son changed locations several times before Bill and his son Charles finally moved the funeral home to its present location near the downtown square in 1943. Charles continued to serve families with the same sincerity and respect he had learned from his father and grandfather. When he retired in 1980, his two sons took over the business, seeking to preserve the family’s heritage of helping the people in the community of Newton County.

Located just a few blocks from the downtown square, J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home is situated in the heart of Newton County’s attractive historic district. This classic turn-of-the-century style dwelling served as the Harwell-family home for many years. In the early 1950s, it was transformed into a full-service funeral home. Throughout the years, the building has undergone numerous improvements in keeping with the ever-changing needs of our community.

Boasting a beautiful, rocking-chair front porch and elegant entrance parlor complete with original fireplace, Harwell Funeral Home provides the perfect neighborly setting for funerals and visitations of varying sizes. With three staterooms and a large chapel that can seat more than 200 individuals, our facility has been well-designed to provide you and your guests a comfortable and pleasant experience. We have spacious hallways and a large open area between the front parlor and the chapel, providing an excellent place for guests to mingle outside the visitation rooms.

The interior is decorated in a manner befitting the area’s historic flavor. The facility was beautifully remodeled in 2003 to provide all the necessary amenities of a modern funeral home while still maintaining the integrity of the century-old Southern home that has earned its place as a local landmark. The chapel is tastefully decorated in a simple, yet classic style and houses a sophisticated sound system and keyboard. Traditional furnishings and elegant artwork adorn the newly refurbished facility.
