Dorothy Mae Burnett Smith of Oxford passed away peacefully on May 4, 2018 at the age of 89. She was the daughter of Joseph and Lula Weathers Burnett. She lived in Walton County as a child but Newton County was home for the rest of her life. She was the widow of J.C. Smith and never remarried after his death in 1966 choosing to devote her life to her children and other family. Dorothy was the only girl in a family with six brothers, all who predeceased her: Johnny Burnett, Harold Burnett, Robert Burnett, Ben Burnett, J.B. Burnett and E.J. Burnett.
Dorothy cherished her time with children, grandchildren and other family. The mountains were her favorite travel destination, and she especially loved visiting the Indians in Cherokee, N.C. She loved vegetable gardening and canning/freezing the produce from those gardens. She also took pride in her flowers and fruit trees. Dorothy was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Oxford.
She is survived by children, Tommy (Carolyn) Smith, Mary (Tom) Brown, Bonnie (Joe) Ellington of Oxford, Clara (Ashley) Thacker of Covington and Faye Davis of Newborn. There are 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Her beloved sister-in-law is Lanier Burnett of Buford, GA.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 3 o’clock Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Cheek, Reverend Mike Franklin, and Reverend Randy Richards officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 5, 2018.
