Don Gray, age 71, passed away October 3, 2024. He was born March 16, 1953 in Hillsboro, Texas. Don was a loving husband, devoted partner, and best friend to Carol Gray, his wife of 50 years. He was a beloved father to Jeremy (Kelley) Gray of Atlanta, and Heather Gray of Briceland, California, and a cherished Paw Paw to Everett, Eila, Leo, and Maxwell. Don’s love was also extended to his brothers, Tim (Teri) Gray of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Stephen (Shannon) Gray of Savannah and to Carol’s family (Neva, Eddie, Ned, Cheri, and Tag), who Don loved as his own. His parents, Earl and Leona Gray, and his sister, Hope Thompson preceded him in death.
Don was a successful businessman, helping to found, grow, and manage the family business, Crystal Clear Ice Co. in Savannah. His dedication and hard work were truly remarkable. However, his work did not define him. His true essence was in his love for nature and the open air. An avid hiker, camper, kayaker, and bike rider, Don found joy and peace in the great outdoors. A gentle friend to all creation, Don never met a dog he didn’t like. One of Don’s gifts was a keen ear for great music. His expansive collection of albums included the best of classic rock, country, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, and soul artists; Don’s passion for music influenced the musical taste of nearly everyone who spent time with him. A member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Don’s faith was an integral part of his life, providing a strong foundation of love and generosity and a peace surpassing understanding as he faced the challenges of ALS.
A Memorial Service will be held at 5 o’clock Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Reverend Leah Cunningham officiating. The family will gather with friends from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Don’s memory to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church or to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (www.appalachiantrail.org).
