Donald R. Byrd

Mr. Donald R. Byrd, age 87 of Covington passed away Monday, February 5, 2024.  He was born in Covington on July 26, 1936 to Jesse and Dorothy Byrd who have preceded him in death.  Mr. Byrd grew up in Conyers and was a 1955 graduate of Conyers High School.  He worked for Lithonia Lighting and retired in 1998. Mr. Byrd served in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing, golf, and tennis, and played tennis until he was 85.  Mr. Byrd was also a talented woodworker who turned many beautiful pieces that his family and friends cherish today.    

Mr. Byrd was a man of strong faith and read his Bible on a regular basis.  He committed his life to the Lord many years ago and enjoyed sharing his faith with others. Mr. Byrd was a current member of Stewart Community Church and formerly attended Countyline Baptist Church, Prospect Church at Oak Hill, and The Church at Covington.  Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother David Byrd.

Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife Joan Stokes Byrd; his son and daughter-in-law Mark and LeAnn Byrd of Oxford; his daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Lyls Renoit of Blue Ash, Ohio; his grandchildren Josh, Justin, Andrew, Tyler, Braelyn, Cody, Trey, Isabella, and Katie; his great grandchildren Hagen and Oaklynn Allen; his sister-in-law Linda Byrd of Covington; his brother-in-law Fred and Janie Stokes of Conyers; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many close friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Byrd will be held at 2 o’clock Friday, February 9, 2024 at the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Johnson officiating.  Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service of Friday.
