Mr. Ernest R. Johnson, age 76, a lifelong resident of Covington, Georgia, passed away on May 16, 2026. Born on October 27, 1949, in Porterdale, Georgia, he lived a life marked by devotion to his family, loyalty to his friends, and a warm spirit that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Ernest was the beloved son of the late Ralph and Doris Johnson. He was a loving husband to Carol Johnson and a proud father to Eric Rowell and his wife Allison, Tina Pennington and her husband Scott, Wesley Johnson and his wife Shannon, and Brian Johnson and his wife Brandi. He was also a cherished grandfather to Tyler, Taylor, Josh, Triston, Collin, Rylee, River, Griffin, Eli, Rhett, Masin, and Olivia, and a treasured great-grandfather to Brantley and Indie. His family was the center of his life, and he found great joy in the many generations that followed him.

He is also survived by his sisters, Caroline Glow, Sharon Pounds, Nancy Allen, and Myra Yarbrough, as well as his brother, James Johnson. Ernest leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many close friends who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Doris Johnson, whose guidance and example helped shape the man he became, his uncle and best friend Robbie and his aunt Marsha Johnson.

Ernest devoted 25 years of service to Mobil Chemical, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, reliability, and steady presence. He took pride in doing his work well and in being someone others could count on. Throughout his life, he built lasting relationships through his kindness, his easygoing nature, and the genuine care he showed to those around him.

In his free time, Ernest enjoyed fishing, and he especially enjoyed arguing with Olivia in the playful way that brought laughter and personality to family gatherings. Those who knew him best will remember him as loving and friendly, two words that perfectly reflected the way he lived and the way he treated others. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, and his presence brought comfort, humor, and familiarity to those fortunate enough to know him.

Ernest R. Johnson was a strong man of faith and an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church.  He served proudly in the United States Army for four years, serving as a military police officer and was stationed in Texas.  Ernest will be deeply missed and remembered by his family and friends. His life was a testament to the importance of family, hard work, and kindness, and his memory will remain a lasting blessing to all who loved him.

Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Fellowship Baptist Church, 4297 Hwy 81, Oxford, GA 30054, with Pastor Joe Reid officiating.  Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
