In Loving Memory of a Dedicated Public Servant and Cherished Family Man
Franklin Ray “Root” Foster, Jr., age 80, of Jackson, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
Franklin was born on November 27, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Franklin Ray Foster, Sr. and Nell Foster, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in Dekalb County, where he formed lifelong friendships and values that would guide him throughout his life. Franklin graduated from Avondale High School.
Franklin proudly served in the Dekalb County Police Department for over 20 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant before his retirement. His commitment to public safety and his community earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.
Franklin was passionate about golf and fishing, spending many joyful days on the course and at the water’s edge. He was a devoted fan of Alabama Football, cheering for his team every season. Franklin also gave back by coaching the Midway Mighty Mites baseball and football teams for many years, positively influencing young athletes and fostering community spirit.
Franklin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherry Foster; his son, Franklin Ray Foster III; and his brother, Lewis Leon “Lee” Foster. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Tonya Foster; grandchildren Gregory Foster, Tierra Howell, and Johnte Garner; nephew Jonathan Foster; and numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service, providing friends and loved ones an opportunity to pay their respects and share memories.
Franklin Ray “Root” Foster, Jr. will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his warm heart, and his steadfast commitment to his family and community. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
