Gloria Allgood Obituary

This obituary was lovingly prepared by the family.

Lena Gloria Ray was born on October 16, 1926, in Oxford, Georgia.  She passed peacefully at home in Covington, Georgia on April 30, 2023.  Her parents were Herschel G. Ray and Lena Allen Ray.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Cary Barnett Allgood and her son Cary Ray Allgood.  Her siblings Sanders Ray (Frances), Herschel Ray (Bernadette), and Martha Ray Meyers (Jerry) passed before her.  Surviving are her daughters Betty Ann Allgood Haymore (David), Covington, GA and Caren Allgood Gibb (Roger), Virginia Beach, VA.  She adored her Grandchildren Albert S. Killingsworth IV, San Antonio, TX and Gloria Lena Killingsworth Reach (Evan), Owings, MD.  Later in life she welcomed Grandchildren Philippa Gibb Kermani (Tom), Weymouth, England, Matthew Gibb (Carolyn) Matthews NC, and Lauren Haymore Greensboro, NC.  She also has six Great Grandchildren, Emmett and Jackson Reach; Collingwood and Charles Gibb; Edie and Rafe Kermani.

Gloria’s love of children is evidenced by her professional work. She owned and operated Bo Peep Day Care Center in Oxford for over 20 years where she had a multitude of happy days teaching and nurturing hundreds of children.

Gloria joyfully served her church, Allen Memorial United Methodist Church in Oxford and, before her death, was the longest living member of the church.  Teaching bible school, working for charities, and providing food and friendship for both happy and sad occasions were just a few examples of her service to the church.

As a long-time citizen of Oxford and Newton County she belonged to the Amitie (friendship) Club, the group of Oxford civic groups, and the Newton County Hospital Auxiliary League.

In their retirement, Cary and Gloria enjoyed travel in the USA and Canada.  Both were lovers of nature.  Two of many of her favorite memories were watching migratory Sandhill cranes in Nebraska and the colorful aspen leaves in Autumn.  Alaska was a favorite road trip destination. In addition, she spent many happy hours playing bridge as a member of several bridge clubs.
