Mrs. Jane F. Barber passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on July 30, 1945, in Birmingham, Alabama she lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, faith, and a gentle spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
Jane was a woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to those around her. She was widely remembered for her sweet nature and her gracious manner, and many who called Mansfield Elementary School over the years will forever remember her as the sweet voice on the other side of the phone. Her kindness was so natural and so sincere that, as those who loved her often said, sugar would not melt in her mouth. She carried herself with quiet dignity and a caring heart, and she made a lasting impression through simple acts of love, patience, and service.
Jane devoted 40 years of faithful service to Mansfield Elementary School, where she served as secretary and became an important part of the school community. She worked alongside her mother, Mrs. Findlay, who taught first grade at Mansfield, making the school not only a place of work but also a place where family and service came together. Through the years, Jane became a steady and familiar presence to students, parents, teachers, and staff alike. Her dedication, reliability, and warm personality made her a beloved part of the school’s history, and her contributions will long be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Jane was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and later made her home in Covington, Georgia, after marrying her husband, Arthur Barber, in the late 1960s. Arthur was from Mansfield, and together they built a life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Arthur Barber, her parents, Charles and Katherine Findlay, her sister, Elizabeth Scott Stewart, her brother, Michael “Mike” Findlay, and her nephew, Robert Crumbley. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life, and she carried their love with her always.
A faithful member of Julia A. Porter Church in Porterdale for more than 50 years, Jane lived her faith in a quiet and steadfast way. She loved her church deeply and found strength and joy in her relationship with the Lord and in the fellowship of her church family. She was known as a good Christian woman who lived by example, showing compassion, humility, and grace in the way she treated others. Her faith was not only a part of her life, but a guiding force that shaped the way she loved, served, and encouraged those around her.
Jane was also known for her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to make others smile. She had a gift for laughter and a personality that could brighten even the hardest day. Her family and friends will remember her as someone who was funny, loving, and full of life.
She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Beth Findlay, Mellisa Jewel, Laura Ann May and her husband Michael, and John Crumbley and his wife Diane. She also leaves behind several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews who will carry forward her memory with love. In addition, she is survived by four of her best friends who were like sisters to her, Marva Kay Stewart, Lura Ozment, Betty Bailey, and Karen O’Kelley, each of whom shared in her life’s joys and sorrows and held a special place in her heart.
A Memorial Service for Jane will be at 2 o’clock on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Julia A. Porter church located in Porterdale, GA with Pastor Steve Steinhilber officiating.
