It is with heavy hearts that we announce that John Howard “Butch” Johnson peacefully went home to be with the Lord on April 10, 2026, after a brief and valiant battle with liver cancer.
Butch was born on May 28, 1960, in Covington, Georgia, the son of Idus Johnson and Rebecca “Becky” Dowdy.
He attended Newton County Comprehensive High School, Class of 1978. Following high school, Butch enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served his country and rose to the rank of Sergeant as a Tactical Satellite/Microwave Systems Operator. His time in the military shaped his strong sense of discipline and character—values he carried throughout his life.
After his service, Butch became a builder and contractor in the local community, earning multiple awards from the Georgia Home Builders Association. He was also featured on episodes of Flip This House. After many years in the construction field, and as a true entrepreneur at heart, he later opened and operated JH Johnson Pallet and Corban Pallet Co. alongside his good friend, Jeff Riley, in the last several years of his life.
Above all, Butch was a man of faith who loved the Lord and never hesitated to share that love with others. Prayer was always in his heart and on his lips, whether for family, friends, or strangers. He found immense joy in being “B-Paw” to his grandchildren, a role he cherished deeply. One of his favorite pastimes was shopping at Goodwill, where he had a special talent for finding unique treasures and great deals to share with those he loved.
Butch is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Johnson; his son, Taylor Johnson (Lisa Mitchell); and his “bonus” daughters, Allie Kinard, son-in-law Brandon and Megan Gibbs. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Ashton Johnson, Peyton Gunnells, Haidyn Kinard, Jonah Madson, Charlee Kinard, and Lizzie Kinard.
He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Eve Johnson; his adoring aunt and second mother, Omer Kelly; his cousin and brother-at-heart, Chuck Kelly; his stepfather, Clark Dowdy; his sisters-in-law, Amanda and Christy McGiboney, Gay Goodman, Becky Walden, and Leslie Walden; his brothers-in-law, Bryan and Lovie McGiboney, Wade Jackson, Ed and Candi Walden, and Will and Angie Walden; his uncles, Joseph Hackett and Paul Hackett (Debra); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends who were like family, and his faithful dog, Cheerio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Idus Johnson and Becky Hackett Dowdy and his Sister In-law Diana McGiboney Jackson.
Butch will be remembered for his generous spirit, unwavering faith, and the love he shared so freely with everyone he met. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Mansfield Baptist Church, 101 Woodlawn Road, Mansfield, GA 30055. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope".
