Joseph "Chris" Powell Obituary

Mr. Joseph Christopher Powell passed away on January 26, 2026, at the age of 63. Born on November 6, 1962, to Horace and Sarah Powell, Chris's life was one marked by dedication, love, and service. His journey through life was shared with his beloved wife of 40 years, Billie Sue Powell, who predeceased him, along with his parents and his brother Marvin and sister-in-law Ann.

Chris was a proud graduate of Newton County Comprehensive High School, class of 1980, and later went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Christian ministry from Trevecca Nazarene University. His commitment to faith and community was unwavering, guiding him through all aspects of his life.

Upon marrying the love of his life, Billie, Chris moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, where he honorably served in the United States Navy for 11 years. His time in the Navy was a testament to his steadfast spirit and love for his country. Eventually, Chris returned to his roots in Covington, Georgia, where he continued to be a pillar in his community.

Chris was blessed with a loving family, survived by his children, Carissa Reed (Stephen) of Cumming, and Christian Powell (Austin) of Covington; his cherished granddaughter, Persephone Reed, who knew him as her adoring Paw Paw; brothers, Mac Powell (Brenda) of Tucker, Jerry Powell (Anne) of Covington; and sisters-in-law, Carla Bruce (Scott) of Hiawassee, Johnnie Ivey (Clay) of Covington, and Tonya Owens (David) of Covington. His role as a father, brother, and grandfather was one he cherished deeply, and his guidance and love will be missed by all who knew him.

Chris's passion for the ministry was evident to all who encountered him. He lived a life of service, always ready to help others and spread kindness wherever he went. His gentle demeanor and warm smile were sources of comfort and strength to many. Chris's legacy is one of compassion and altruism, and his impact on the lives he touched will continue to resonate.

In his leisure, Chris found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His love for his granddaughter Persephone was boundless, and he was over the moon for every moment he spent with her. Chris's life exemplified the virtues of faith, hope, and charity. He was a beacon of light in his community, and his absence will be felt deeply by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
