Mr. Lamar Fincher, a cherished father, cousin, and friend, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 75. Born on August 17, 1949, to Olin and Louise Fincher, who preceded him in death, Lamar's journey was one marked by dedication, service, and a passion for the community that surrounded him.
Lamar was a longtime member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church; and later became a member of Luther Hays Presbyterian Church in Hayston just outside of Mansfield. Decades of church membership and Bible reading led Lamar to have a remarkable knowledge of Scripture.
Lamar graduated from Newton High School in 1967. After earning a technical degree, he embarked on a career that would see him work for General Motors until 1974. Lamar then had a long career at Bellsouth where he helped install early phones lines in many parts of rural Newton County. Lamar later retired from Bellsouth. His strong sense of duty called him to serve his country in the United States Army Reserves for 20 years, many of which he dedicated to communications within the Army Reserve. His commitment to his country was unwavering and deeply respected by all who knew him.
Family was the cornerstone of Lamar's life as evidenced by his decades long interest in his family genealogy, particularly any involvement in the War Between the States. He is survived by his loving daughter, Amy Miller, and her husband, Matt. His legacy of kindness and strength lives on through them and through his faithful cousin, Kevin Courchaine, Kevin's wife Latisha, and their son, Carson, all of whom Lamar held dear. The bonds of family and friendship he fostered were a testament to the warmth and generosity that defined him.
Beyond his professional and family life, Lamar was deeply involved with the Masonic Lodge serving a total of 51 years in several lodges, most recently in the Ancient York Masonic Lodge #127 in Worthville, Georgia. His brothers in the lodge knew him as a man of integrity and fellowship, always ready to lend a hand or share a word of wisdom.
An avid collector and enthusiast, Lamar's interests were as varied as they were long-standing. From childhood, he immersed himself in the world of coin collecting, a hobby that brought him much joy and satisfaction throughout his life. His love for classic cars was epitomized in his prized 1967 Corvette, a vehicle that was not just a mode of transport but a symbol of his appreciation for craftsmanship and American ingenuity.
Lamar's passion for speed and competition found another outlet in his love for NASCAR, which he followed with enthusiasm. In his early retirement days, he could often be found on the golf course, enjoying a round with friends and relishing the outdoor life that golf afforded.
The story of Lamar Fincher is one of a life well-lived and full of purpose. He made an indelible mark on the lives of many through his service, his hobbies, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell to Lamar, we celebrate a life that exemplified loyalty, camaraderie, and the joy of lifelong learning and exploration. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of his family members, close friends, and all those touched by his generous spirit.
