Mamie Garner Obituary

Obituary was lovingly provided by family.

January 11, 1929 - January 10, 2022

Mamie Nell Dial Garner, 92, passed away on January 10, 2022. She was born and lived her entire life in the Dialtown community near Oxford, Georgia.  Mamie was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Thomas Odell Garner. Mamie was a farmer’s daughter whose strength of character was molded as a child enduring the hardships of the Great Depression and as a young teenager living through the uncertainties of World War II. Raised on the farm, she developed a love of the outdoors which led to her lifelong passion for mowing grass and growing flowers. One of her proudest accomplishments was grooming her Bermuda grass lawn with her John Deere tractor, which she continued to do until age ninety. Her motto was, “Anyone and everyone can see the outside of your home, so take care of your yard accordingly."

Although she did not have the opportunity to attend college, Mamie understood the value of education and how it could change lives. She instilled in her children and grandchildren that school took top priority and obtaining a higher education was not negotiable. Mamie was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. One of the defining periods of Mamie’s life was during her husband’s battle with ALS. She cared for him faithfully and made sure his every need was met during his final years. Mamie was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oxford where she was a member for eighty years.

Mamie was also preceded in death by her parents Starr W. and Eva Sockwell Dial; brothers Albert Dial, Herbert Dial, and Rayford Dial and sisters Rachel Dial Cowan and Martha Dial Chambers. She is survived by her children Dale Mark (Karen) Garner and Connie (Jeff) Guthrie; grandchildren Reid (Ashley) Garner, Rebecca (Zach) Robbins, and Todd Guthrie; great-grandchildren Amelia Garner, Garrett Garner, and Jackson Robbins. She is also survived by her brother Clayton Dial and sister Bertha Dial Cason.

Funeral services will be held privately. J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home, TE Davis Funeral Services, 2157 East Street, SE, Covington, GA  30014.
