Mary Virginia Morgan passed away on June 22, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on March 17, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family and the many children whose lives she touched through her lifelong work in education.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Woodie and Tinne Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Lynn Morgan, her son, Gerald “Jay” L. Morgan, Jr. and his wife Cheryl; her grandchildren, Bryan Sandler and his wife Kail, Cody Sandler and his wife Dayne and Danielle Sandler; her great-grandchildren, Isla Katherine, Amelia Sandler, Avi Sandler, Bentley Smith, Allura Whitehead, and Coraline Whitehead; and by many other family members and close friends who will cherish her memory.
Virginia earned her associate’s degree in early childhood education as well as an associate’s degree in business. Her education reflected both her love of learning and her practical spirit, qualities that served her well throughout her life. She taught children all her life, and in doing so, she made a lasting difference in the lives of countless young people. Later in life, Virginia cared for the elderly. Her patience, honesty, and steady presence were gifts to those around her, and she was respected for the sincerity and directness with which she approached life.
Those who knew Virginia will remember her as a woman who was very direct and very matter-of-fact, yet deeply loving and devoted. She was a proud and loyal Georgia football fan and an enthusiastic Atlanta Braves baseball fan. She also loved the ocean, finding peace and joy in its beauty and strength. Reading was one of her great pleasures, and she enjoyed books constantly throughout her life. Above all else, Virginia adored her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. They were the center of her world, and her love for them was boundless and unmistakable.
Virginia loved God and carried that faith with her by way she cared for others. Her life was a reflection of strength, devotion, and sincerity. She was a woman who loved deeply, spoke honestly, and gave generously of herself to her family and to the children she taught.
Her family and friends will remember Virginia for her unwavering love, her sharp wit, her steadfast spirit, and the many ways she enriched the lives of those around her. She will be deeply missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, Virginia made a request before her passing that donations be made to the Dementia Society of America or to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family will announce a celebration of life at a later date.
