Robert Benson

Robert Proctor Benson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 26, 2025.  Born on September 8, 1946, in Warrenton, North Carolina, Robert's life was one rich with love, service, and the simple joys that create a life well-lived.

Robert received a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in business from Georgia State University.  Following his service in the United States Navy, Robert channeled his passion for the outdoors into a successful career in landscape architecture at Robert & Company.  For 35 years, Robert left his creative mark on the natural world, including projects for the Atlanta Zoo, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and numerous streetscapes throughout the Southeastern U.S.

Married to the love of his life, Sharon, for 56 years, together they built a family that was his pride and joy.  Robert was a guiding light to his daughter, Shannon Benson Whiting, and her husband Matthew.  The legacy of his kind and nurturing spirit lives on through his beloved grandchildren, Sam and Laney.

His brother, Howard Benson, along with his wife Patty, shared in the many adventures and stories that only siblings can accumulate over a lifetime.  Robert's brother-in-law, Toby Harris, and his wife Susan, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members, will carry forward the memories of the many gatherings, laughter, and love that Robert was central to creating.

Robert's interests reflected his mindset as a designer and a craftsman.  He loved craft beer and barbecue, quiet time in his workshop, pushing the speedometer on his Porsche and sharing his enthusiasm for classic cars, classic rock and his Georgia Bulldogs.  Above everything, he loved spending time with his family, cherishing every moment spent with his grandchildren and imparting wisdom, warmth and humor in equal measure.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at a later date.
