Robert L. Elwell Jr, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025, in Covington, Georgia. Born on August 12, 1947, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Bob's journey through life was marked by his unwavering faith, boundless love, and an adventurous spirit that touched all who knew him.
Bob's early life set the stage for a lifetime of achievement and service. After graduating with a Bachelor of Business from Virginia Tech in 1969, where he distinguished himself as a Baseball Letterman, Bob's love for the game led him to play semi-pro baseball in the Shenandoah Valley League. His passion for helping others guided him to further his education, earning a Doctor of Optometry from the University of Alabama Birmingham in 1976. This began a remarkable 49-year career as a private practice optometrist, where he dedicated his life to improving the vision and lives of countless individuals.
In addition to his private practice, Bob served as an optometrist for the Atlanta area Center for the Visually Impaired, where his expertise and compassion made a significant impact on the community. His professional life was a testament to his commitment to service and his desire to bring light into the lives of others.
Bob's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. He is survived by his sister Julie Allnutt, his loving wife of 55 years, Alexa Elwell, their three sons Brandt, Jeret, and Warren, along with their respective spouses, Pam, Nora, and Katie. Bob was a proud grandfather to Sam, Max, Joey, Gus, Hannah, Julianne, Andy, Theo, and Francie Elwell. His role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and he cherished every moment spent attending his grandchildren's events and celebrating their achievements.
An avid lover of the great outdoors, Bob's interests took him on many backpacking and hiking adventures. He found solace in the tranquility of nature, whether he was swimming in his lake or exploring a new trail. His adventurous spirit was a source of inspiration to his family and friends, encouraging them to embrace life's journey with enthusiasm and courage.
Bob's character was the embodiment of faith-filled living. His loving nature was evident in his daily interactions, always putting the needs of others before his own. His adventurous approach to life was not just about seeking thrills, but about embracing the challenges and opportunities that life presented with a positive attitude and a trusting heart.
As we remember Bob, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, and a man who inspired us to see the beauty in the world around us. His memory will continue to guide us, like a beacon of light, reminding us to live with faith, love, and a spirit of adventure.
Bob's life story is one of dedication, both to his family and his faith, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones and the community he served with such distinction.
We bid farewell to Robert L. Elwell Jr., a man who saw the world not only through the lens of an optometrist but through the eyes of a man who truly understood the value of faith, family and community. May his soul rest in peace, and may his spirit continue to inspire us all.
“May the Lord Bless you and keep you; may He shine his face upon you and be gracious to you; may He look upon you kindly and grant you His peace; may He grant you right faith, certain hope, and a perfect charity.”
