Steve Biggers Obituary

Mr. Steve Biggers, age 77, a lifelong resident of Newton County passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Piedmont Newton Hospital. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the exceptional care given to Mr. Biggers during his stay and compassion shown to them during this difficult time.

Mr. Biggers was born February 26, 1943 in Porterdale, GA to Hill and Louise Banks Biggers who have preceded him in death.  He grew up in Covington and was a graduate of Newton County High School.  Steve proudly served in the United States Navy returning to Newton County after 5 years of service.  He started his career with the City of Covington Fire Department where he served for 21 years.  During that time, he completed his Fire Science Degree at Dekalb Technical College, was a President of the Georgia Fire Chief’s Association, and achieved the rank of Deputy Chief before retiring.

Following his retirement from the City of Covington he served as the Fire Coordinator for Newton County.  Chief Biggers transitioned into to a new role with ease and served as EMA Director for Newton County.  During his years with the EMA he was responsible for establishing the Newton County 911 Center a great achievement for all of Newton County.

There is so much more to Steve Biggers than just his service to the City of Covington and Newton County; he was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend.  Steve truly had a servant’s heart and a multitude of talents which he loved to share with everyone.  He was a talented musician and loved to play all types of music; playing with the Biggers Family Band, the Mansfield Pickers, Rambling Creek, Benny Riders Gum Creek Boys, and the Newborn Opry and Jubilee.  His servant heart did not stop there; he was very active in the Special Olympics both locally and World Games level where he was a coach.  Steve carried the torch on to the square in Covington during the 1996 Olympic Games and used that torch every year at the Special Olympics in Covington.  He was a longtime member of Mansfield Baptist Church and also served as a Deacon there for many years.  Steve was also a Mason and member of Mansfield Masonic Lodge.  Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Mrs. Hilda Biggers Prosser.

Mr. Biggers is survived by his wife of 51 years Mrs. Carol Ann Biggers, his children Doug and Terri Biggers, and Ann and Marshall McCart, his grandchildren Leeanne and Rusty Blankenship, Dalton Biggers, Kylie and Rhett Johnson, and Laney McCart, his brother-in-law Jerry Prosser, his brother Chuck and Wendy Biggers, his nieces and nephews Beth and Todd Nolan, Susie Prosser Gates, Chip and Alexis Prosser, Becky and Darrell Smallwood, and Hill and Bridgett Biggers, his stepmother Betty Ann Smith.  Along with many great nieces, great nephews, and a host of other family and close friends.
