Usher "Tom" Thomas Smith, Jr

Mr. Usher Thomas “Tom” Smith, age 96, a lifelong resident of Newton County passed away Friday, January 24, 2025.  Mr. Smith was born in Mansfield on May 18, 1928 to Usher Thomas and Vesta Nash Smith who have preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith was a longtime member of Mansfield United Methodist Church where he served all the boards of the church at one time or another.  He worked as the Southeastern Sales Manager of Chinet Company a molded paper products manufacturer.  Mr. Smith also served on the Advisory Board of the Bank of Mansfield, the Board of Directors of the Mansfield Community Center, he was also a retired cattleman, and served on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Marketers. Mr. Smith was well known around Mansfield and Covington and was an Honorary Member of the Breakfast Club at Mamie’s Kitchen

Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Eileen and Mike Davis; his son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Pat Smith.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Sherry Whitaker (Royce), Chris Smith, Keith Davis (Shawn), Amy Davis, and Lorie Bender (Michael); his great grandchildren Avery Davis, Olivia Bender, Alex Bender, and Darcie Whitaker; along with a host of other family members and many close friends.                         

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11o’clock Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Mansfield Methodist Church with Reverend Todd Hilton officiating.  Interment will follow at Carmel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, January 27, 2025.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mansfield United Methodist Church, 3031 N. Main Street, Mansfield, GA 30055
