Wiley Allgood, Jr. Obituary

Wiley Adolphus Allgood, Jr. passed away at his home in Cypress Village, Jacksonville, FL at the age of 85, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.  Wiley was born in Oxford, GA on October 29,1935 to Wiley A. Allgood, Sr. and Roberta Voncile (Cook) Allgood.  He grew up in Oxford, attending Palmer-Stone School and graduating from Newton County High School in 1953.  He was the oldest of three.  He was especially close with his grandparents and uncles.  Following high school, he studied Chemistry, first at Oxford College, finishing up at “big” Emory in Atlanta in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts.  He participated in ROTC, and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF.  He attended pilot training at Moody Air Force Base, GA and Laughlin Air Force Base, TX training in the T-37 and T-33 aircraft.  Following flight training, Lt. Allgood flew the F-86D/L Saber and F-102 Delta Dagger, assigned to Niagara Falls Air Force Base, NY, Goose Bay Air Base, Labrador, Canada, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC.  Wiley resigned his Air Force commission in 1963 as a Captain, and joined Delta Air Lines, returning to Georgia.  He flew DC-7, DC-8, DC-9, Convair 440 and 880, Boeing 727, and Lockheed L-1011 aircraft.  His last few years of flying included international flying to Europe, retiring in 1995.  After retirement, Wiley transitioned to living in Florida.  First in Beacon Hill, then moving to Green Cove Springs, and finally to Cypress Village in Jacksonville.  He enjoyed playing the piano, golfing, cruising, and spending time with his family. 

Wiley married Norma Lynn Kent, the love of his life, in 1970. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was active in the Oxford Lions Club, a longtime member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church and Orange Park United Methodist Church.

Wiley is survived by his wife, Norma Allgood and his four children, Wiley Virgil (Heidi) Allgood, Heidi (Chris) Stoneking, Holly (Eric) Ellis, and Michael (Kim) Allgood.  He has nine grandchildren, Elizabeth (Daniel) Parker, Emma Stoneking, Hannah Marlowe, Abigail (Gabriel) Coalson, Madison Marlowe, Sarah Stoneking, Wiley David Allgood, Benjamin Allgood, and Bryce Allgood.  He has three great grandchildren, Josiah Parker, Gideon Parker, and Juliet Coalson.  He is also survived by his sister, Voncile Martin and her husband, George, his sister-in-law, Frances Allgood, and numerous aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins.  Wiley was predeceased by his brother, James “Sam” Allgood, Sr. (2016).

Wiley’s Graveside Service will be held on Monday, February 1st, 2021 at 11:30 am at the Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, Covington, GA, with Rev. Pistol Robinson officiating.  A family visitation will be held at J. C. Harwell & Sons, 2157 East Street SE, Covington, GA, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, just prior to the graveside service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.  J.C. Due to the COVID 19/Coronavirus Pandemic all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements will be followed.  There is a limit of 50 people at any large gathering, social distancing must be recognized, the use of mask is encouraged, and most importantly if you feel sick or have any symptoms of COVID 19 you will not be allowed to attend the service.  Please be respectful of the family during this difficult time and follow the requirements of the CDC.
